Louie was an up-and-coming track star. Many experts believed that he had it in him to run the first 3-minute mile in history. Unfortunately, he never had a chance to fulfill his potential as an athlete because his track career was rudely interrupted by World War II.

While serving his duty in the Unites States Army Air Forces, his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean, and he found himself stranded at sea with nothing but two companions and two life rafts.

"I'd made it this far and refused to give up because all my life I had always finished the race."

Louie Zamperini

From that point, Louie was forced to suffer through incredible trials and tribulations. From being shot at, to fending off sharks, to being tortured by Japanese POW guards, to surviving bombings, Louie Zamperini saw more than his fair share of the Second World War.

Before you do anything else, take the time to read his story. In her book, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, Laura Hillenbrand does a fantastic job of recording Louie Zamperini's incredible life.

Her book does more than merely retell Louie's story, though. It is an excellent introduction to what life was like in America during War World II. Anyone who finishes reading "Unbroken" is bound to come away with a deeper appreciation for how easy life is today.

Learn Louie's story. Change your perspective.
