Christmas in Seoul

By Micky Miranda

The countdown has begun. Christmas is upon us. Some of us head home, others head to exotic destinations, and a few of us stay in Seoul.

Christmas in Seoul

The lights come out and that means "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!"

Christmas is still a relatively new concept in Korea. While it is a family day in western countries, in Korea it is usually a day of romance and dates. However, many westerners do prefer getting together and having Christmas feasts.

This guide has been divided into the following sections:

Christmas-related Activities

Lotte World (part 1)
Lotte World has a Christmas festival that runs from November to December. Grab the kids and enjoy meeting all of your favorite Christmas characters. (website)

Lotte World Skating Rink (part 2)
For many people, ice skating and Christmas go hand in hand. If you are one of these people, take advantage of Lotte World's ice-skating rink while you are at Lotte World enjoying their Christmas festival.

COEX
Located in Gangnam, COEX is a large shopping mall that is hosting its second annual winter festival. A large area is set up with a Christmas theme. Best of all, kids are able to explore Santa's workshop and take a picture with Santa. The festival runs from December 10 to December 31. (website)

Korean Children's Center Snow Sledding
There is a sledding field for kids located in Gwangjin-gu. Admission is 10,000 won, which includes the tube rental. The center is open from December 20 to February 22. (More information at Visit Korea)

Although it is a little pricey, the Grand Hyatt offers a great ice-skating rink that overlooks the Han River. They also offer a Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve party. The ice-skating rink is open from December 4 to February 28. (website)

French Christmas Market
On Saturday, December 13, the Francophone Association will host a Christmas Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Santa, clowns, French food, wine, and champagne will all be present. (More information at Korea 4 Expats)

Christmas Performances

Camarata Music Company
Every year, the Camarata Music Company does a live rendition of 'Messiah' (Hallelujah!). This year's performance takes place on December 12. Tickets are only 20,000 won. (website)

The Little Singers of the Paris Wooden Cross Christmas Concert

The Nutcracker
Performed in Seoul since 1977, The Nutcracker has become a year-end staple. The performance runs from December 18 to December 27. (website)
